Overview
Picnic Reserve is an outdoor space reservation and booking platform that connects people with curated picnic spots, park pavilions, and scenic outdoor venues for rent by the hour or day. The platform serves both individual consumers planning family gatherings, date nights, and celebrations, and municipal parks departments and private landowners looking to monetize underutilized outdoor spaces. 1976 Studios was engaged to design and build the full product — from brand identity and UX strategy through to a production-ready React web application with real-time availability calendars, payment processing, and a host-facing management dashboard. Launched in 2023, Picnic Reserve operates across multiple metro areas and has become the go-to booking layer for urban outdoor experiences.
The Challenge
Outdoor space reservation had no dedicated digital infrastructure. Park pavilion bookings were handled by phone calls to city offices, paper forms, and email chains — a process so cumbersome that most people simply showed up and hoped the space was available. Private landowners with beautiful outdoor spaces had no accessible way to list them for short-term use. Meanwhile, consumer demand for curated outdoor experiences was accelerating rapidly, driven by a post-pandemic shift in how people socialize. Picnic Reserve's founder identified the gap but faced a product challenge common to marketplace businesses: building something useful enough for both sides of the transaction simultaneously, with real-time availability, payment handling, and host tools all needing to be solid on day one.
The Solution
1976 Studios architected Picnic Reserve as a two-sided marketplace with distinct but connected experiences for guests and hosts. The guest-facing product was designed around discovery and simplicity — a map-first browsing interface with filters for group size, amenities, shade, accessibility, and price, feeding into a streamlined booking flow with date/time selection, add-on options (equipment rental, catering packages from partner vendors), and Stripe-powered payment. The host dashboard gave space owners and parks departments a clean management interface for availability calendars, booking approvals, payout tracking, and guest communication. The technical architecture used real-time availability locking to prevent double-bookings, with a reservation hold system that gave users five minutes to complete checkout before releasing the slot. The mobile-responsive design was treated as the primary surface, given the inherently on-the-go nature of the use case.
The Outcome
Picnic Reserve launched in Denver, Colorado with 47 listed spaces and reached 200 confirmed bookings within the first 60 days. Guest satisfaction scores averaged 4.8 out of 5 across the first 500 bookings, with ease of booking cited as the top positive factor in post-visit surveys. The platform expanded to two additional cities (Austin and Portland) within eight months of launch, onboarding municipal parks partnerships in both markets. Host retention — the percentage of space owners who remained active on the platform after 90 days — reached 91%, driven by the clarity and reliability of the host dashboard. Total booking volume crossed $180,000 in the platform's first year of operation, and Picnic Reserve secured a seed funding round in early 2024 to accelerate its expansion to ten additional markets.
