Overview

CharacterForge is a web-based character creation and development platform built for writers, game designers, screenwriters, and worldbuilders who need more than a blank document to bring their characters to life. The platform provides a structured yet flexible environment for building deep, consistent character profiles — covering psychology, backstory, relationships, voice, and visual reference — all organized in a way that keeps complex casts manageable across long-form projects. 1976 Studios designed and developed CharacterForge from concept to launch in 2024, creating both the product experience and the brand identity. The platform serves solo creatives and collaborative writing teams, with a project architecture that scales from a single short story character to an ensemble cast across a multi-season television series.

The Challenge

Writers and narrative designers have long relied on a patchwork of tools — Word documents, Notion databases, Pinterest boards, handwritten notebooks — to manage their characters. None of these tools were built for the job. The result is fragmented character knowledge, inconsistent voice and motivation across long projects, and the constant friction of hunting for information that should be instantly accessible. CharacterForge's founder, a produced screenwriter with three feature credits, wanted a tool that thought about character the way a writer does: not as a form to fill out, but as a living, evolving creative artifact. The challenge for 1976 Studios was to build something that felt deeply intuitive to creative people who are often resistant to structured systems, while providing enough scaffolding to actually solve the consistency problem.

The Solution

1976 Studios opened the engagement with a week of intensive interviews with working writers across novels, games, and film — mapping the actual mental models they used when developing characters and the specific moments where their current tools broke down. From this research, we designed CharacterForge around three core principles: depth without overwhelm (progressive disclosure of character fields so new profiles start simple and grow organically), relationship mapping (a visual graph that shows how characters connect, conflict, and influence each other), and voice capture (a dedicated module for logging character-specific dialogue samples, speech patterns, and internal monologue examples that writers can reference to stay on-voice). The front end was built in React with a custom graph visualization layer for the relationship map. A collaborative mode with role-based permissions was implemented for writing room use cases, and an AI-assisted character development feature was integrated to help writers break through development blocks with targeted prompts.

The Outcome

CharacterForge launched to a waitlist of 3,400 writers who had signed up during a soft-launch beta campaign run across writing communities on Reddit, Discord, and Substack. The platform converted 22% of that waitlist to paid subscribers within the first 30 days — a rate that significantly exceeded projections. Average session length landed at 34 minutes, indicating deep product engagement from the target audience. The platform received coverage in three screenwriting and fiction-writing newsletters with a combined readership of over 200,000, and was selected as a recommended tool by two prominent online writing courses. By the end of Q4 2024, CharacterForge had surpassed 8,000 active users and expanded its team from a solo founder to a four-person operation supported by its subscription revenue.
