Adopt a Duck
Wildlife adoption program web platform for Wildlife Parks Unlimited
Overview
Adopt a Duck is a wildlife conservation adoption platform built for Wildlife Parks Unlimited, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving wetland ecosystems and the waterfowl species that depend on them. The platform allows individuals, families, schools, and corporations to symbolically adopt a duck from the organization's network of wildlife sanctuaries, directly funding habitat preservation, veterinary care, and environmental education programs. Built as a fully responsive web application, the experience was designed to make conservation feel personal, joyful, and tangible — giving every donor a named duck, a digital adoption certificate, and real-time updates on their duck's wellbeing.
The Challenge
Wildlife Parks Unlimited had a passionate donor base but no digital infrastructure to scale their giving programs. Adoption campaigns were managed via spreadsheets and manual email follow-ups, creating an unsustainable bottleneck as the organization grew. They needed a platform that could handle adoption intake, payment processing, certificate generation, and ongoing donor communication — all without requiring a large technical team to maintain it. The challenge was to build something warm, story-driven, and emotionally engaging rather than a generic donation form, while keeping operational complexity as low as possible for the non-profit's small staff.
The Solution
1976 Studios designed and built a full-stack web platform centered around a joyful, story-first adoption experience. Each duck in the sanctuary network has its own profile page — complete with name, habitat, personality notes, and a photo gallery — allowing donors to browse and choose their duck before committing. The adoption flow was streamlined into a four-step process: choose your duck, select an adoption tier, personalize your certificate, and complete payment. On the backend, automated certificate generation, email confirmation sequences, and a donor dashboard were built to eliminate manual staff effort entirely. The platform also included a conservation impact tracker showing how adoption funds were being deployed across habitat restoration, feeding programs, and veterinary initiatives.
The Outcome
Within the first three months of launch, Adopt a Duck surpassed Wildlife Parks Unlimited's previous annual adoption numbers, with over 2,400 ducks adopted and a 340% increase in average donation size compared to the prior paper-based program. The platform's emotional storytelling approach drove exceptionally high social sharing rates, with nearly 30% of adopters posting their certificates to social media and tagging the organization. Staff time spent on adoption administration dropped by over 90%, freeing the team to focus on field conservation work. The program has since expanded to include school group adoption packages and a corporate gifting tier, both introduced within six months of the initial launch.
